Our Story

The Squam Lakes Conservation Society was established in 1960 by lakeside property owners seeking a non-governmental approach to conserving land in the Squam watershed located in central NH. Their vision along with the broad support of the community has led to over 30% of Squam’s land in permanent protection, and almost all of it in private ownership! During that time, SLCS has completed 188 conservation projects, including ownership of over 1,135 acres and holders of  over 140 conservation easements. In total, SLCS stewards over 10,000 conserved acres. SLCS is led by an engaged Board of Directors and a creative and experienced staff. With strong support from the community, SLCS is leading an ambitious effort called Forever Squam to increase the amount of conserved land in the watershed to 40%.
